reflecting

reflecting on my life —
i’ve sometimes found
myself surrounded
by bitterness
anger, resentment
& dishonesty

though i myself admit
i often
missed the mark —

i suppose we all do

though i believe my motives
were (i hope)
pure

though i
sometimes went along
with webs of existential
emptiness & confusion
maybe having a dim
desire to fit in

but usually i
had the good sense
to just detach a bit
& just appear quiet

but there was more
to me, than met the eye

i hope that i’m not saying this
in arrogance or a sense of
superiority

but rather what i suspect
sustained
nurtured & frankly
just helped me cope —
sometimes even thrive

was a deep attachment to the
Divine —
though i recall a few people scoffing
& gossiping about me
just for carrying a sacred book
to scan at lunch —

frankly i just seen them
as trouble makers which i
know sounds judgmental

so i politely declined their
invitations to “go out & party”
it simply wasn’t me
i certainly wasn’t about to
surrender holiness
& grieve
my Divine soul

maybe i looked down
to the ground too much
with gloom

rejecting normative ways
& customs, but i think not

i knew tremendous
inner joy, peace
& connection

i won’t say it was easy —
why should i lie?

yet today i seem
to be reaping the rewards
of simply trying
& from my parents
& ancestors who prayed
hard — simple common
decent people

these are generational
blessings, i believe

as i have
a devout, committed wife
who is the embodiment
of life itself

always lifting others
accepting & even embracing
my ideocentric ways

& these days i feel
so content and happy
despite agonizing physical pain —
but we all have challenge

& i think i can honestly
say i wish all well

i rejoice when others
prosper

as always i’m sitting
at the window —
the sky’s quite misty
& gray & it’s still
raining just a bit

& all this beauty is so
indescribable & sings
Divine love

as we used to say
on the west side of Chicago

“it’s all good”
